🕌 The Sovereign, The Pure: The Cosmic Symphony of Surah Al-Jumu'ah

All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls and the consequences of our deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can mislead, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
To proceed: Indeed, the truest speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ.
Have you ever wondered why Allah chose four specific names to open Surah Al-Jumu'ah—the very Surah we recite in our grandest weekly gathering? Why did He pair the mention of His ultimate sovereignty in the heavens with the sending of an unlettered Prophet on earth? There is a divine secret hidden in the first two verses of this Surah, a profound theological sequence that explains your very existence and the transformation of humanity. Today, we will unlock this majestic sequence. By the end of this Khutbah, you will never read the beginning of Surah Al-Jumu'ah the same way again.
O servants of Allah!
Imagine a symphony that never stops. A grand, cosmic chorus that echoes through the galaxies, resonating in the deepest oceans, and vibrating in the smallest atoms. This is not a metaphor; this is reality. Allah Almighty declares in the opening of Surah Al-Jumu'ah:
﴿يُسَبِّحُ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ﴾
"Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Almighty, the Wise." [Al-Jumu'ah 62:1].
Pause and reflect! Allah uses the present tense: Yusabbihu (يُسَبِّحُ). He did not say they glorified Him in the past, but rather, they are glorifying Him right now. As you sit here in this Masjid, the sun, the moon, the stars, the trees, the birds, and the very cells in your body are engaged in an unending state of Tasbeeh (glorification). It forces us to ask a terrifying question: If the entire mindless universe is in a constant state of glorification, how can the human being—the one endowed with intellect and free will—remain silent and heedless?
Allah does not merely tell us that He is glorified; He tells us exactly by which Names He is glorified in this context. Four majestic Names: Al-Malik (The Sovereign), Al-Quddus (The Pure), Al-Aziz (The Almighty), Al-Hakim (The Wise).
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, reveals a breathtaking insight about this specific sequence of Names. He explains that human kings might possess sovereignty (Mulk), but their rule is often flawed with oppression, mistakes, and impurities. Therefore, Allah follows "Al-Malik" (The Sovereign) with "Al-Quddus" (The Pure/The Holy). He is the King, but unlike earthly kings, His Kingdom is absolutely pure, flawless, and free from
any defect or injustice.
Yet, a king might be pure and good-hearted, but weak and unable to enforce his will. Thus, Allah follows it with "Al-Aziz" (The Almighty, The Unconquerable). He is pure, but He is not weak; He possesses ultimate might. But wait—might and power, if unchecked, can lead to tyranny and recklessness. So, Allah seals the sequence with "Al-Hakim" (The Wise). His sovereignty is pure, His purity is supported by unstoppable might, and His might is perfectly governed by infinite wisdom!
What a Lord we worship! What a Creator we bow to! ﴿ذَٰلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ ۖ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَاعْبُدُوهُ﴾ "That is Allah, your Lord; there is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him." [Al-An'am 6:102].
But what does the Sovereign, Pure, Almighty, and Wise Lord do for humanity? What is the greatest manifestation of His sovereignty and mercy on earth?
The answer comes immediately in the very next verse. Listen carefully to how the heavens connect to the earth:
﴿هُوَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَإِن كَانُوا مِن قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ﴾
"It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom - although they were before in clear error." [Al-Jumu'ah 62:2].
Do you see the divine connection?
Because He is Al-Malik (The Sovereign King), a King must send decrees to His subjects. His greatest decree was sending Muhammad ﷺ.
Because He is Al-Quddus (The Pure), He sent a Prophet whose primary mission is to purify human hearts from the filth of polytheism and sin (يُزَكِّيهِمْ - purifying them).
Because He is Al-Aziz (The Almighty), He took the weakest, most ignored, unlettered nation on earth—the Arabs of the desert—and granted them an unconquerable might through this message.
Because He is Al-Hakim (The Wise), He chose the perfect time, the perfect place, and the perfect, unlettered Prophet ﷺ to deliver a miracle that no intellectual could ever forge.
O believers! Let us travel back 1400 years to witness the state of these "unlettered" people (Al-Ummiyyin) before this divine intervention.
They were tribes tearing each other apart over a stolen camel. They buried their newborn daughters alive in the sand due to false pride. They worshipped stones they carved with their own hands. They were, as the verse explicitly states: ﴿وَإِن كَانُوا مِن قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ﴾ "although they were before in clear error."
Look at the magnificent scene when Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, stood before the Najashi (the King of Abyssinia). He did not boast about Arab lineage; he admitted their dark reality to highlight the light of the Prophet ﷺ. He said:
"O King, we were a people of ignorance, worshipping idols, eating dead meat, committing abominations, severing family ties, treating neighbors badly, and the strong among us would devour the weak. We remained in this state until Allah sent to us a Messenger from among ourselves... He called us to Allah to affirm His Oneness and to worship Him... He commanded us to speak the truth, fulfill trusts, uphold family ties, and be kind to neighbors..."
This is the manifestation of Al-Quddus! The Pure Lord sending a Prophet to purify a polluted society.
The Prophet ﷺ said, summarizing this exact mission:
«إنَّما بُعِثتُ لأُتَمِّمَ مَكارِمَ الأخلاقِ»
"I was only sent to perfect good moral character." [Reported by Ahmad].
Brothers and sisters in Islam,
Notice the precise order of the Prophet's duties in the verse:
First: Reciting His verses (يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِهِ) - Connecting them to the Word of Allah.
Second: Purifying them (وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ) - Cleansing the heart, the soul, and manners.
Third and Fourth: Teaching them the Book and Wisdom (وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ) - Imparting deep knowledge and the Sunnah.
Have you ever asked yourself: Why did Allah mention Purification (Tazkiyah)
BEFORE Teaching (Ta'leem)?
Imam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, noted that knowledge without a pure heart is like planting a beautiful seed in toxic soil; it will yield nothing but poison. A heart filled with arrogance, envy, and love for worldly desires cannot truly comprehend the Book of Allah, even if the tongue memorizes its letters!
Let me share with you a breathtaking story of how the Prophet ﷺ performed this Tazkiyah (purification) in real time.
A young man once came to the Prophet ﷺ in the middle of the gathering. The blood of youth rushed through his veins, and his desires blinded his etiquette. He stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said openly: "O Messenger of Allah, give me permission to commit Zina (fornication)!"
The companions gasped! Some shouted at him, ready to strike him for such blatant disrespect in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ. But remember, the Prophet ﷺ was sent by Al-Quddus, the Purifier.
The Prophet ﷺ calmly said: "Bring him close."
He did not yell. He did not draw a sword. He drew the young man close until their knees almost touched. Then the Prophet ﷺ began the process of Tazkiyah.
He asked: "Would you like it for your mother?"
The young man replied: "No, by Allah, may Allah make me a ransom for you."
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Neither do people like it for their mothers."
"Would you like it for your daughter?"
"No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah!"
"Neither do people like it for their daughters."
He went on to mention his sister, his paternal aunt, and his maternal aunt. In every instance, the young man vehemently refused.
Then, the Prophet ﷺ placed his blessed hand on the young man’s chest and made a Dua:
«اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ ذَنْبَهُ، وَطَهِّرْ قَلْبَهُ، وَحَصِّنْ فَرْجَهُ»
"O Allah, forgive his sin, purify his heart, and guard his chastity."
The narrator of the Hadith said: "After that, the young man never looked at anything forbidden again." [Reported by Ahmad, authenticated by Al-Albani].
This is Yuzakkeehim! This is the medicine of the Prophet ﷺ. He took a heart enslaved by desire, and with wisdom, patience, and divine connection, he scrubbed it clean until it reflected the light of heaven.
But look at our condition today! We live in an era where we have reversed the Quranic order. We have immense "Teaching" (Ta'leem), but almost no "Purification" (Tazkiyah).
You hold in your hand a smartphone that contains more books of Hadith, Tafseer, and Fiqh than the greatest scholars of the past could gather in a lifetime. Yet, what is the state of our hearts?
We have PhDs in Islamic studies who sever ties with their own parents over inheritance. We have people who memorize the Quran but their tongues drip with backbiting and slander on social media. We have businessmen who pray in the first row but cheat their partners without a second thought.
Why? Because we skipped the Tazkiyah! We took the information but bypassed the transformation. We forgot that Allah said:
﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا﴾
"He has succeeded who purifies it, And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]." [Ash-Shams 91:9-10].
Al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: "The Quran was revealed to be acted upon, but people took its recitation as their [only] action."
O Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ!
We have lost our Izzah (Might) because we disconnected from Al-Aziz. Allah gave this Ummah honor through the exact formula mentioned in this Surah: The Book and the Wisdom, preceded by internal purification.
Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, stood before the armies of the world and declared the ultimate truth: "We were the most humiliated people, but Allah honored us with Islam. If we seek honor in anything else, Allah will humiliate us."
Where are you from the Book of Allah? Where are you from the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ?
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«مَثَلُ الَّذِي يَذْكُرُ رَبَّهُ وَالَّذِي لا يَذْكُرُ رَبَّهُ، مَثَلُ الحَيِّ وَالمَيِّتِ»
"The example of the one who remembers his Lord in comparison to the one who does not remember his Lord, is that of a living
creature compared to a dead one." [Reported by Al-Bukhari].
Are you alive, or are you just breathing? Does your heart vibrate with the Tasbeeh of the universe, or is your heart the only silent object in a glorifying cosmos?
I say these words and seek forgiveness from Allah the Almighty for myself, for you, and for all Muslims from every sin. So seek His forgiveness, for indeed He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
O servants of Allah, we spoke in our first Khutbah about the grand opening of Surah Al-Jumu'ah. We reflected on how the Sovereign, the Pure, the Almighty, and the Wise Lord orchestrates the universe. We saw how the sending of the Prophet ﷺ was the ultimate act of Divine Purity to cleanse humanity. We recognized that our contemporary crisis is a crisis of Tazkiyah (purification)—we have knowledge, but we lack the pure hearts to carry it.
Now, the defining question stands before us: How do we translate this majestic reality into our daily lives? How do we purify ourselves today?
I advise you with five practical steps before you leave your place of prayer:
First (For the Heart): Renew your intention to truly know Allah through His Names. Do not just memorize "Al-Malik" and "Al-Quddus"—live them. When a calamity strikes, remember you are in the dominion of Al-Hakim (The Wise). When you feel weak, lean on Al-Aziz (The Almighty). A heart attached to the Names of Allah is a heart that cannot be broken by this world.
Second (For the Tongue): The Prophet ﷺ used to say a specific Dua after finishing his Witr prayer, repeating it three times, raising his voice on the third: «سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ» "Glory be to the Sovereign, the Pure" [Reported by An-Nasa'i]. Revive this Sunnah tonight. Let your tongue join the cosmic symphony of Tasbeeh.
Third (For your Actions): Do not let a single day pass without exposing your heart to the Quran for the purpose of Tazkiyah, not just recitation. Read one Ayah tonight, read its Tafseer, and ask yourself: "What is the disease in my soul that this Ayah is trying to cure?"
Fourth (For your Social Life): Purify your environment just as the Prophet ﷺ purified his companions. If your circle of friends pulls you towards backbiting, vanity, and the trivialities of social media, distance yourself. ﴿وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ﴾ "And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance." [Al-Kahf 18:28].
Fifth (Regarding our Topic): Respect the day of Jumu'ah. This Surah was named Al-Jumu'ah for a reason. In its conclusion, Allah says: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ﴾ "O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade." [Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]. Make an intention today: Next Friday, I will be in the Masjid early. I will not let the angels close their scrolls before my name is written.
Fear Allah, O servants of Allah, for Taqwa is the foundation of all purity.
Then send your prayers and blessings upon the one you were commanded to send prayers upon, as your Lord commanded you: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا﴾ "Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace." [Al-Ahzab 33:56].
O Allah, send prayers and
blessings upon Your servant and messenger Muhammad, and upon his family and companions, and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment.
O Allah, The Sovereign (Al-Malik), The Pure (Al-Quddus), we ask You by Your beautiful Names to purify our hearts from hypocrisy, our actions from showing off, our tongues from lying, and our eyes from treachery.
O Allah, You sent Your Prophet ﷺ to purify us; O Allah, do not let us die until You have cleansed us of our sins and polished our hearts to receive Your light.
O Allah, Al-Aziz (The Almighty), grant honor and might to Islam and the Muslims.
O Allah, Al-Hakim (The Wise), guide us to make choices that please You, and protect us from the delusions of this temporary world.
O Allah, relieve the distress of the oppressed Muslims everywhere. O Allah, be a supporter and a helper for our brothers and sisters who are suffering, facing injustice, and enduring hardship. Pour patience upon their hearts and grant them a way out from every difficulty.
O Allah, make the best of our days the day we meet You, and the best of our deeds the final ones.
"Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." [Al-Baqarah 2:201].
Servants of Allah! Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
Remember Allah the Great, and He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors, and He will increase you. And the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows what you do.
Establish the prayer.
