🕌 The Prophets’ Call: Secrets of Answered Prayers #Friday_Sermon #Dua #Prophets #Patience #Faith #Supplication #Lessons All praise is due to Allah, the All-Hearing, the Ever-Near, the One who answers the desperate when they call upon Him, the Remover of harm and affliction. He made supplication (Du'aa) the master key to the treasures of His mercy and the ultimate weapon for the believers in their times of trial. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without any partners. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, the leader of those who supplicate and the master of those who rely on Allah. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, and his companions. To proceed: Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, have you ever found yourself in a situation so dark, so suffocating, that you felt entirely alone? Have you ever faced a medical diagnosis that shattered your world, a financial crisis that kept you awake at night, or a family breakdown that left your heart in pieces? In those moments of crushing despair, what do we usually do? We reach for our phones. We call our friends, our doctors, our lawyers, our financial advisors. We knock on every worldly door, only to find that human capability is terrifyingly limited. But what if I told you that the greatest men to ever walk the earth—the Prophets of Allah—faced trials far more severe than ours? They were thrown into blazing fires, swallowed by giant whales, stripped of their health and wealth, and chased out of their homelands. Yet, they possessed a secret weapon. A weapon that split the seas, cooled the fires, cured the incurable, and brought life to barren wombs. That weapon was Du'aa—pure, unadulterated supplication to the Lord of the Worlds. Today, we will embark on a profound journey through the Book of Allah. We will examine the prayers of the Prophets. We will uncover the secrets hidden within their words, and most importantly, we will answer the golden question: Why did Allah answer them so miraculously, and how can we unlock that same divine response in our own lives? Let us begin in the terrifying depths of the ocean. Imagine being Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him. He abandoned his people in frustration and ended up swallowed by a massive whale. He was trapped in three layers of insurmountable darkness: the darkness of the night, the darkness of the deep ocean, and the darkness of the whale's belly. There was no rescue team, no oxygen tank, no human intervention possible. What did he do? Did he panic? Did he complain? Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us: ﴿وَذَا النُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَاضِبًا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ أَن لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ﴾ "And [mention] the man of the fish [Jonah], when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.'" [Al-Anbiya: 87]. Reflect deeply on this Du'aa! He did not say, "O Allah, get me out of here!" He did not explicitly ask to be saved. Instead, his prayer consisted of three profound elements: Tawheed (Monotheism): "There is no deity except You." Tanzih (Glorification): "Exalted are You" (You are perfect and free from any flaw). I'tiraf (Confession): "Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."
He realized that the true crisis was not the whale; the true crisis was his shortcoming toward his Lord. When he fixed his relationship with Allah through pure confession, the physical crisis dissolved. And what was the immediate divine response? ﴿فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُنجِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴾ "So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers." [Al-Anbiya: 88]. Notice the end of the verse: "And thus do We save the believers." This rescue was not exclusive to Yunus! If you, the believer sitting here today, use this same formula of sincere confession, Allah promises to save you from your distress. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed this when he said: «دَعْوَةُ ذِي النُّونِ إِذْ دَعَا وَهُوَ فِي بَطْنِ الْحُوتِ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَدْعُ بِهَا رَجُلٌ مُسْلِمٌ فِي شَيْءٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا اسْتَجَابَ اللَّهُ لَهُ» "The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Jonah) when he supplicated, while in the belly of the whale was: 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' No Muslim man supplicates with it for anything, ever, except that Allah responds to him." [Reported by At-Tirmidhi]. Now, let us shift our gaze from the depths of the sea to a bed of agonizing illness. Look at Prophet Ayyub (Job), peace be upon him. He lost his vast wealth. He lost his beloved children. He lost his health to the point where his body was entirely ravaged by disease for years. Everyone abandoned him except his devoted wife. When the pain reached its peak, how did Ayyub speak to his Lord? Did he demand a cure? Did he ask why this was happening to him? Allah records his beautiful, shy, and polite whisper: ﴿وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ﴾ "And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, 'Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.'" [Al-Anbiya: 83]. SubhanAllah! What breathtaking etiquette (Adab) with the Almighty! He simply described his situation ("adversity has touched me") and then praised Allah's infinite mercy ("You are the Most Merciful of the merciful"). He was too shy to directly demand a cure, leaving the outcome entirely to Allah's wisdom. He did not complain of Allah to the people; he complained to Allah about his pain. And because of this exquisite manners in Du'aa, the heavens opened: ﴿فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِ مِن ضُرٍّ ۖ وَآتَيْنَاهُ أَهْلَهُ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْعَابِدِينَ﴾ "So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers." [Al-Anbiya: 84]. Brothers and sisters, where is your whale? What is your illness? What is the barren land in your life? Consider Prophet Zakariya (Zechariah), peace be upon him. His hair had turned white, his bones were frail, and his wife was barren. By all biological and medical standards, having a child was impossible. But a Prophet's heart does not recognize the word "impossible" when dealing with the Creator of causes and effects. ﴿وَزَكَرِيَّا إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ﴾ "And [mention] Zechariah, when he called to his Lord, 'My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while You are the best of inheritors.'" [Al-Anbiya: 89]. He asked for a child, not out of worldly desire to have someone carry his name, but to have a righteous heir who would carry the banner of Tawheed. And the response came instantly: ﴿فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُ يَحْيَىٰ وَأَصْلَحْنَا لَهُ زَوْجَهُ﴾ "So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife." [Al-Anbiya: 90].
But now, O Muslims, we arrive at the absolute core of today's message. We have seen these astonishing miracles: the sea giving up its prisoner, the disease fleeing the body, the barren womb bursting with life. But why? What was the secret ingredient? Why did Allah answer them with such breathtaking speed and power? Is it just because they were Prophets? No! The Quran gives us the universal formula. Right after mentioning the rescue of Zakariya, Allah reveals the secret behind all these answered prayers in one magnificent, world-altering verse: ﴿إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًا وَرَهَبًا ۖ وَكَانُوا لَنَا خَاشِعِينَ﴾ "Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive." [Al-Anbiya: 90]. Allahu Akbar! There is the secret! "They used to hasten to good deeds." They did not wait until the crisis hit to build a relationship with Allah. They built their "spiritual credit" during times of ease, health, and wealth. Listen to the profound wisdom of the Prophet ﷺ as he advises Ibn Abbas, and by extension, all of us: «تَعَرَّفْ إِلَى اللَّهِ فِي الرَّخَاءِ يَعْرِفْكَ فِي الشِّدَّةِ» "Recognize Allah in times of prosperity, and He will recognize you in times of adversity." [Reported by Ahmad]. This is where we falter today. We live in an era of instant gratification. We ignore Allah when our pockets are full and our bodies are healthy. We skip prayers, we consume the unlawful, we harbor hatred in our hearts. But the moment a crisis hits, we suddenly raise our hands and demand an immediate, Amazon-Prime-style delivery of a miracle. And when the answer is delayed, we despair and say, "I prayed, but Allah didn't answer me." The great scholar Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy upon him) explained this beautifully. He said: "Whoever treats Allah with piety and obedience during times of ease, Allah will treat him with gentleness and aid during times of hardship." It is the unseen balance. When you hasten to the mosque when you are healthy, Allah hastens His angels to protect you when you are sick. When you give in charity while you are wealthy, Allah provides for you from unimaginable sources when you are broke. Furthermore, look at the condition of their hearts during the Du'aa: "in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive." Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy upon him) draws a vivid picture of this state. He says: "The heart in its journey to Allah is like a bird. Love is its head, and fear and hope are its two wings. When the head and two wings are sound, the bird flies perfectly. If the head is cut off, the bird dies. If it loses its wings, it becomes prey to every hunter." When you raise your hands, are you flying to Allah with the wings of hope (that He is the Most Generous) and fear (of your own sins)? Or are you raising your hands while your heart is distracted, scrolling through a screen, completely detached from the Majesty of the One you are addressing? The Prophet ﷺ warned us clearly: «ادْعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَنْتُمْ مُوقِنُونَ بِالإِجَابَةِ، وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَسْتَجِيبُ دُعَاءً مِنْ قَلْبٍ غَافِلٍ لَاهٍ» "Call upon Allah while being certain of being answered, and know that Allah does not respond to a supplication from a heart that is heedless and inattentive." [Reported by At-Tirmidhi]. Consider the emotional burden of Du'aa. Umar ibn Al-Khattab, the commander of the faithful, رضي الله عنه, used to say a phrase that shakes the core of every believer: "I do not carry the anxiety of the answer; rather, I carry the anxiety of the supplication. For if I am inspired to make the supplication, the answer comes with it." Do you understand what Umar is saying? He is saying: Allah is too Generous to reject a sincere plea. Allah says: ﴿وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ﴾ "And when My servants ask you concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me." [Al-Baqarah: 186]. And the Prophet ﷺ said:
«إِنَّ اللَّهَ حَيِيٌّ كَرِيمٌ يَسْتَحْيِي إِذَا رَفَعَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَيْهِ يَدَيْهِ أَنْ يَرُدَّهُمَا صِفْرًا خَائِبَتَيْنِ» "Indeed, Allah is Modest and Generous. He feels shy when a man raises his hands to Him to turn them away empty and disappointed." [Reported by Abu Dawud]. So the problem is never with the Answerer; the problem is with the one asking! Are we genuinely asking? Are our incomes Halal (lawful), so our prayers are not blocked? Are we showing the brokenness of Ayyub and the urgent confession of Yunus? Remember the greatest human being, our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, on the day of Ta'if. He was stoned, bleeding, rejected, and humiliated. He retreated to an orchard, raised his blessed, bleeding hands, and poured his heart out in the most beautiful display of vulnerability in human history. He did not ask for the destruction of Ta'if. He said: "O Allah! To You I complain of my weakness, my lack of resources, and my humiliation before the people. O Most Merciful of the merciful! You are the Lord of the weak, and You are my Lord... If You are not angry with me, I do not care what happens to me..." When the heart truly breaks before Allah, the heavens are mobilized. So I ask you today, dear brothers and sisters: What is standing between you and your miracle? Is it a sin you refuse to leave? Is it an arrogance that prevents you from crying on your prayer mat? The door is open. The Lord of Yunus, Ayyub, and Zakariya is your Lord. He is waiting for you to call. ﴿أَمَّن يُجِيبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوءَ﴾ "Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil?" [An-Naml: 62]. All praise is due to Allah, abundant, pure, and blessed praise, as our Lord loves and is pleased with. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his companions. Servants of Allah, we spoke in our first Khutbah about the majestic Du'aa of the Prophets. We witnessed the power of Yunus’s sincere confession in the dark, Ayyub’s exquisite patience and politeness in illness, and Zakariya’s unwavering hope despite old age. We learned the ultimate secret: that Allah answers those who hasten to do good during times of ease, and who call upon Him with a mixture of profound hope and terrifying awe. But now, the critical question remains: How do we translate these monumental historical lessons into our daily lives? How do we become people whose prayers pierce the clouds? I advise you with five specific, actionable steps before you leave this gathering today: First (For your Heart): Purify your intention and realize that a delayed answer is a test of your Yaqeen (certainty). Do not be the person who says, "I prayed and prayed, but Allah didn't answer," so you give up. The Prophet ﷺ said that a person is answered as long as they do not become hasty and give up. Sometimes, Allah delays the answer because He loves to hear your voice in the night. Trust the timing of the Almighty.
Second (For your Tongue): Make the Du'aa of Prophet Yunus your daily companion. Memorize it, teach it to your children, and whisper it when anxiety grips your chest: La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin (There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers). Say it 100 times a day. Let it be the shield that protects you from the whales of depression, debt, and sorrow in this modern world. Third (For your Actions): Never raise empty hands. Before you make a massive, desperate Du'aa to Allah, offer a secret charity (Sadaqah), even if it is just a few dollars. Help a widow, feed a stray animal, or assist someone in need quietly. Present a good deed before your request, for Allah is generous to those who are generous to His creation. Fourth (For your Social Ties): Forgive someone who wronged you tonight. How can we raise our hands and beg Allah, the King of Kings, to forgive our mountains of sins, while we refuse to forgive our brother, our sister, or our spouse for a minor slight? Clear the bitterness from your heart, and watch how the blockages in your life are cleared. Fifth (The Core Theme): Start your "Bank of Ease" today. Do not wait for the hospital call. Do not wait for the pink slip at work. Tonight, wake up 15 minutes before Fajr, pray two Rak'ahs in the darkness of your room, and talk to Allah while you are healthy, wealthy, and secure. Recognize Him now, and I swear by Allah, He will recognize your voice when the storms of life arrive. O Allah, we ask You as You are the All-Hearing, the Near, the Responder of prayers. O Allah, grant us the patience of Ayyub, the desperate reliance of Yunus, and the unwavering hope of Zakariya. O Allah, we confess that we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers. O Allah, heal our sick, have mercy on our dead, relieve the distress of the anxious, and pay off the debts of those in debt. O Allah, look down upon our brothers and sisters suffering all over the world. O Allah, be a refuge for the oppressed and the weak. Pour upon them Your patience and grant them a swift and decisive victory. O Allah, make us of those whose prayers are answered, whose sins are forgiven, and whose hearts are bound to Your remembrance. ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ ۚ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ﴾ "Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded." [An-Nahl: 90]. Remember Allah, the Great, and He will remember you. Thank Him for His blessings, and He will increase you. And the remembrance of Allah is the greatest, and Allah knows what you do.
