🕌 The Weight of a Word: Building Hearts or Breaking Them #Friday_Sermon #Guarding_The_Tongue #Good_Word #Accountability #Manners #Islamic_Ethics All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls and the consequences of our actions. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone without any partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. "O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims." "O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women..." "O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins..." Amma Ba'd (To proceed): Indeed, the truest speech is the Book of Allah, the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ, and the worst of affairs are newly invented matters. Every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is a misguidance. Imagine a weapon so light it carries no physical weight, yet so devastating it can tear a family apart in a matter of seconds. Imagine a charity so effortless it costs no money, yet so valuable it can save a soul from despair and heal a broken mind. This extraordinary tool is right now resting behind your teeth. One single movement of it can elevate you to the highest levels of Paradise, and one careless slip can drag you into unimaginable ruin. What is this double-edged sword? And why are we so blind to its danger? The answer lies in the very words we speak. Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, Allah the Almighty has bestowed upon us countless blessings, from the air we breathe to the health we enjoy. Yet, when Allah mentioned His greatest favors to humanity, He specifically highlighted the gift of speech. He says in the opening of Surah Ar-Rahman: ﴿الرَّحْمَٰنُ ۝ عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ ۝ خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ ۝ عَلَّمَهُ الْبَيَانَ﴾ "The Most Merciful. Taught the Qur'an, Created man, [And] taught him eloquence [speech]." [Ar-Rahman: 1-4]. The tongue is not merely an organ of the body; it is the translator of the heart and the ambassador of the soul. Through it, we declare our faith in Allah, and through it, a person might utter a word of disbelief. This is why the good word—Al-Kalimah At-Tayyibah—is not just a matter of social etiquette or being "polite." In Islam, a good word is profound worship. It is a powerful form of Dawah (calling to Allah), a reflection of deep-rooted ethics, and an act of continuous charity. Have you ever pondered how Allah describes a good word in the Quran? He does not compare it to a passing breeze or a fleeting moment. He compares it to something majestic, deeply rooted, and endlessly giving. Listen to this divine imagery: ﴿أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا كَلِمَةً طَيِّبَةً كَشَجَرَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ وَفَرْعُهَا فِي السَّمَاءِ ۝ تُؤْتِي أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهَا﴾
"Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky? It produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord." [Ibrahim: 24-25]. A single word of encouragement you give to a frustrated youth, a sincere apology that mends a broken brotherhood, a gentle advice that brings a sinner back to the mosque, or a soft, loving sentence spoken to your spouse—these are not just passing sounds. They are seeds planted in fertile soil. They grow, they yield fruit, and they bring you reward long after you have forgotten you even said them. This is why the Prophet ﷺ told us in the authentic Hadith: «وَالْكَلِمَةُ الطَّيِّبَةُ صَدَقَةٌ» "And a good word is a charity." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. But my dear brothers, every coin has two sides. Just as the good word is a towering tree of life, the evil word is a weapon of mass destruction. Mockery, sarcasm, backbiting, slander, and unjust accusations—these are not "just words." They are poisoned arrows. How many families have been completely destroyed because of a whisper of gossip? How many friendships of twenty years were severed because of a sarcastic joke uttered in a moment of arrogance? How many people have stopped coming to the mosque, or distanced themselves from religion entirely, because someone claiming to be righteous spoke to them with harshness and cruelty? The Prophet ﷺ warned us with a terrifying reality. He said: «إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ سَخَطِ اللَّهِ، لَا يُلْقِي لَهَا بَالًا، يَهْوِي بِهَا فِي جَهَنَّمَ» "A servant might speak a word that displeases Allah, without giving it any thought, and because of it, he plummets into Hellfire." [Al-Bukhari]. Notice the phrase: without giving it any thought. He didn't plan it. He didn't think it was a big deal. He just joked about someone's appearance, or casually passed on a rumor, or belittled his wife's efforts in front of others, or humiliated a coworker. He thought it would pass. But it did not pass. This brings us to a terrifying truth, a reality that should make every one of us tremble before we open our mouths. We live in an age where people think they can type a hurtful comment online, ruin a reputation with a rumor, break someone's heart with mockery, and simply move on with their day. They think their words will just vanish into thin air. But Allah says: ﴿مَّا يَلْفِظُ مِن قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌ﴾ "Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]." [Qaf: 18]. Every syllable is documented. Every sarcastic laugh, every unjust accusation, every backbiting session in a coffee shop or a WhatsApp group is preserved in a book that leaves nothing, small or great, except that it has counted it. And on the Day of Judgment, the justice of Allah is absolute and terrifying in its precision. The Prophet ﷺ painted a scene of this justice that should shake us to our core. He ﷺ said: «لَتُؤَدُّنَّ الْحُقُوقَ إِلَى أَهْلِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، حَتَّى يُقَادَ لِلشَّاةِ الْجَلْحَاءِ مِنَ الشَّاةِ الْقَرْنَاءِ» "Rights will surely be restored to their owners on the Day of Resurrection, to the extent that the hornless sheep will settle its score with the horned sheep." [Muslim]. Pause here and reflect deeply. A sheep! An animal with no intellect, no religious obligations, a creature that is not tasked with prayer or fasting, and a creature that will ultimately be turned to dust. Yet, if a sheep with horns bullied, struck, or oppressed a hornless sheep in this world, Allah will resurrect them both. He will grant horns to the hornless sheep so it can take its exact right, and only then will He command them to become dust.
If this is the flawless, inescapable divine justice established for animals, what about you and me? What about the rational, accountable human being who bullies his brother? Who breaks a sister's heart with a cruel word? Who slanders, mocks, or oppresses others with a sharp tongue? Do you really think the heart you shattered will not demand its right from your good deeds while you stand desperately before the Lord of the Worlds? Do you think the family you tore apart with a whisper of Nameemah (malicious gossip) will not stand as your adversaries on a Day when you need every single Hasanah? The great companion Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) once asked the Prophet ﷺ in astonishment: "O Prophet of Allah, will we be held accountable for what we say with our tongues?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: «ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا مُعَاذُ، وَهَلْ يَكُبُّ النَّاسَ فِي النَّارِ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ أَوْ عَلَى مَنَاخِرِهِمْ إِلَّا حَصَائِدُ أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ» "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu'adh! Is there anything that topples people on their faces into the Hellfire other than the harvests of their tongues?" [At-Tirmidhi]. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) beautifully and frighteningly summarized this when he said: "A person may come on the Day of Judgment with good deeds as large as mountains, but he finds that his tongue has destroyed them all. And another may come with bad deeds as large as mountains, but he finds that his tongue has destroyed them through the constant remembrance of Allah." O servants of Allah, how do we use these tongues in our most sacred spaces? How do we speak in our homes? Look at the state of some houses today. A man can be the most polite, smiling, and eloquent person with his friends and coworkers. But the moment he steps into his home, his tongue becomes a whip. He criticizes his wife harshly, shouts at his children over trivial matters, and fills the house with a dark cloud of negativity. Conversely, a wife might speak beautifully to her friends, but speaks to her husband with constant complaints, comparisons, and ingratitude. Allah Almighty commands us: ﴿وَقُل لِّعِبَادِي يَقُولُوا الَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ ۚ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَنزَغُ بَيْنَهُمْ﴾ "And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them." [Al-Isra: 53]. Notice, He did not say "say that which is good," He said "say that which is best." Because Satan is always waiting to take a slightly harsh word, twist its meaning, and ignite a fire of hatred between a husband and wife, or between two brothers. A home built on words of appreciation, where a husband says "thank you" and "may Allah reward you" to his wife, and where a wife speaks words of respect and love to her husband, is a home where angels reside. But a home filled with cursing, shouting, and sarcasm is a breeding ground for demons. The same applies to raising our children. A harsh word, a demeaning label, or a constant comparison can shatter a child’s confidence for a lifetime. But a word of genuine encouragement can build a leader for this Ummah. Remember that the Prophet ﷺ used to call the young boy Anas bin Malik «يَا بُنَيَّ» "O my little son," filling his heart with warmth and belonging. Let us be the ones whose tongues are keys to goodness and locks to evil. Let our words be a source of healing, not a cause of bleeding. I say these words of mine, and I ask Allah the Almighty to forgive me and you for every sin. So seek His forgiveness, for indeed, He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
O servants of Allah, we spoke in our first sermon about the massive weight of words. We reflected on how a good word is a towering tree of ongoing charity, while a careless, hurtful word can destroy a lifetime of good deeds. We paused at the terrifying reality of divine justice—how even the hornless sheep will reclaim its rights—reminding us that the hearts we break and the reputations we tarnish with our tongues will face us on the Day of Judgment. Now, the most crucial question remains: How do we practically apply this? How do we discipline this tongue before it becomes our ruin? I advise you with five practical steps before I step down from this Minbar: First (A matter of the Heart): The Four-Question Filter. Starting today, before you utter a statement, type a comment, or send a message, force yourself to pass it through this four-question filter: Does this please Allah? Is there any injustice or falsehood in it? Will it bring hearts together, or will it cause division and hatred? Am I ready to stand before Allah and meet the person I am talking about on the Day of Judgment with this word? If the answer causes you any doubt, embrace the golden rule of the Prophet ﷺ: «مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ» "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." Silence is a victory when speech is a sin. Second (A matter of the Tongue): Replace the Void with Dhikr. The tongue is like a millstone; if you do not give it grain to grind, it will grind itself. If you do not busy your tongue with the remembrance of Allah, reciting the Quran, and making Dua for others, Satan will busy it with backbiting and useless chatter. Turn your driving time, your waiting time, and your idle moments into a treasury of SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Astaghfirullah. Third (A matter of Action): The Courage to Apologize. If your tongue has slipped in the past—if you have mocked someone, gossiped about a brother, or deeply hurt a family member—have the courage to fix it today. Go to them, apologize, and seek their forgiveness. Do it today, in this world, where apologies cost only a little pride, before a Day comes when there are no dollars or dinars to pay with, only your hard-earned good deeds. Fourth (A Social matter): Be a Source of Peace in Your Home. Start this very day, the moment you walk through your front door. Change the vocabulary of your household. Speak words of deep appreciation to your spouse. Say "I love you" and "I am proud of you" to your children. Thank those who serve you. Make your presence a source of comfort, so that when you enter, the home lights up, and when you leave, you are missed. Fifth (A Topic-specific matter): Be a Peacemaker. Use your tongue to mend broken relationships. If you know two brothers who are not speaking, or relatives who have cut ties, use good words to bring them together. The Prophet ﷺ allowed us to say beautiful things (even if slightly embellished) solely for the purpose of reconciling two disputing Muslims. Healing a fracture between Muslims is better than voluntary fasting and prayer. So fear Allah, O servants of Allah, and know that your words are your legacy. Let us send our peace and blessings upon the one who never spoke except with truth, mercy, and wisdom. Allah the Exalted commands us: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا﴾ "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace." [Al-Ahzab: 56]. O Allah, send Your peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions. O Allah, purify our hearts from hypocrisy, our actions from showing off, our eyes from deception, and our tongues from lying, backbiting, and hurting others. O Allah, make our tongues moist with Your remembrance, and make our words a source of healing and mercy for those around us.
O Allah, protect us from the evil of our own speech, and forgive us for the careless words we have uttered that may have angered You. O Allah, bring the hearts of the Muslims together. Mend the broken ties of kinship among us, and make us keys to goodness and locks to evil. O Allah, grant relief to the oppressed and marginalized Muslims everywhere. O Allah, pour patience upon their hearts, grant them victory, and replace their hardship with ease. O Allah, grant us a good ending, and let our final words in this world be La ilaha illallah. ﴿رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ﴾ "Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." Servants of Allah, indeed Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded. Remember Allah, the Great, and He will remember you. Thank Him for His blessings, and He will increase you. And the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows what you do. Please, establish the prayer.
