Lowering the Gaze and Its Profound Impact on the Purity of the Heart A 15-Minute Friday Khutbah on Modesty, Digital Temptations, and Spiritual Rectitude All praise is due to Allah, the All-Knowing, the All-Aware, the All-Seeing, before Whom no secret is hidden in the depths of the earth or the expanses of the heavens. We praise Him for the blessing of faith, for the gift of sight, and for the guidance of the Sacred Law that protects our hearts from corruption and elevates our souls to the ranks of the pure. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner, Who watches over every glance of the eye and every whisper of the chest; and I bear witness that our Master and Prophet, Muhammad, is the Servant and Messenger of Allah—the noblest role model in modesty, chastity, and devotion. May Allah send His peace, blessings, and grace upon him, upon his pure family, upon his noble Companions, and upon all those who follow their path with excellence until the Day of Judgment. To proceed, O servants of Allah: I advise you and myself to have Taqwa of Allah—to remain ever-conscious of Him in public and in private, when surrounded by people and when behind closed doors. For Taqwa is the fortress that guards the believer in a world overflowing with trials, and it is the only provision that will avail us when we stand before our Lord on the Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit anyone, except the one who comes to Allah with a sound, unblemished heart (Qalbun Salim). Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, young and old alike: Every single day, each one of us wages a quiet, invisible battle for the life and purity of our own heart. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, taught us in the authentic Hadith recorded by Al-Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of An-Nu'man ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with him: «أَلَا وَإِنَّ فِي الجَسَدِ مُضغَةً إِذَا صَلَحَت صَلَحَ الجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ، وَإِذَا فَسَدَت فَسَدَ الجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ، أَلَا وَهِيَ القَلبُ» — "Truly, in the body there is a morsel of flesh; if it is sound and pure, the entire body becomes sound and pure, and if it is corrupt, the entire body becomes corrupt. Truly, it is the heart!" And if the heart is the king of the body and the sanctuary of faith, then what is the main gateway through which light or darkness enters that sanctuary? It is the eye! The scholars of Islam used to say: «البَصَرُ بَرِيدُ القَلبِ وَبَابُهُ الأَكبَرُ» — "The gaze is the messenger of the heart and its widest gate." Whatever the eyes gaze upon, they immediately transmit to the heart; if the eyes are guarded with modesty and reverence for Allah, the heart remains radiant, tranquil, and strong; but if the gates of the eyes are left wide open to everything forbidden, the heart is flooded with restlessness, spiritual darkness, and regret. This is why our khutbah today addresses a subject of vital urgency for every man, woman, youth, and child in our time: "Lowering the Gaze and Its Profound Impact on the Purity of the Heart." Dear believers, let us begin by reflecting on the majestic verses in Surah An-Nur (The Chapter of Light), where Allah Almighty addresses both believing men and believing women with a direct, compassionate command. "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity." Pause and ponder the divine wisdom in these words! First: Notice that Allah addressed both believing men (Al-Mu'minin) and believing women (Al-Mu'minat) with the exact same command. Guarding the eyes is not a duty for men alone, nor for women alone; it is a shared badge of honor and faith for every believer who loves Allah and seeks His pleasure. Second: Notice how Allah placed "lowering the gaze" immediately before "guarding chastity." Why? Because lowering the gaze is the protective shield and the first line of defense! Whoever guards the doorway of the eye effortlessly protects the fortress of chastity, whereas whoever plays with sparks at the doorway risks setting the entire house ablaze. Third: Notice the beautiful phrase: ﴿ذَلِكَ أَزْكَى لَهُمْ﴾ — "That is purer (azka) for them!" In the Arabic language, "Zakah" means both purification from filth and blessed growth. Lowering your gaze does not deprive you; rather, it purifies your soul, elevates your character, and causes your faith, peace of mind, and marital happiness to grow and flourish! Fourth: Notice how Allah concluded the verse: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ﴾ — "Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what they do." Why did Allah remind us of His complete awareness right after commanding us to lower our gaze? Because a glance of the eye is the easiest thing to hide from human beings! A person can sit in a crowded room, or stare at a phone screen, and let his or her eyes wander toward what is unlawful without anyone around noticing. Yet Allah, the Exalted, says in Surah Ghafir: ﴿يَعْلَمُ خَائِنَةَ الْأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِي الصُّدُورُ﴾ [غافر: ١٩]. "He knows the stealthy betrayal of the eyes and all that the breasts conceal." The great Companion 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, explained this verse saying: "It is a man who sits among people; when they look at him, he lowers his head piously, and the moment he sees them heedless, he steals a forbidden glance, while Allah knows both his secret glance and the desire hidden in his chest!" Thus, brothers and sisters, lowering the gaze is the truest test of Taqwa and Muraqabah (mindfulness of Allah). Every time you turn your eyes away from something forbidden when nobody is watching you except Allah, your heart proclaims in action: "O my Lord, Your gaze upon me is greater to me than my desire, and Your pleasure is dearer to me than a fleeting glance!" O servants of Allah: What happens when a person ignores this divine command and unleashes his or her gaze upon the unlawful? What is the true impact of an unbridled gaze on the heart, faith, and daily behavior? Our beloved Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned us with utmost clarity. In Sahih Muslim, Jarir ibn 'Abdillah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: «سَأَلتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَن نَظرَةِ الفُجَاءَةِ فَأَمَرَنِي أَن أَصرِفَ بَصَرِي» — "I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about an accidental, sudden glance, and he commanded me to turn my gaze away immediately." And in Sunan Abi Dawud and Musnad Ahmad, the Prophet ﷺ said to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him: «يَا عَلِيُّ، لَا تُتبِعِ النَّظرَةَ النَّظرَةَ؛ فَإِنَّ لَكَ الأُولَى وَلَيسَت لَكَ الآخِرَةُ» — "O 'Ali, do not follow one glance with another; the first (unintentional) glance is excused for you, but the second is against you." And in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: «فَزِنَا العَينِ النَّظَرُ» — "The zina (unlawful share) of the eye is the forbidden look." When a person repeatedly feeds the eyes with forbidden images and scenes, four devastating spiritual consequences strike the heart: 1. It wounds and exhausts the heart without ever satisfying it. The unlawful gaze is like drinking salty seawater: the more a thirsty person drinks from it, the more burning his thirst becomes! Instead of bringing peace, it leaves the heart restless, anxious, and tormented by unattainable illusions. 2. It robs the believer of the sweetness of worship (Halawat Al-Iman). A person wonders: "Why do I no longer feel humility in Salah? Why do my eyes no longer shed tears when I hear the Quran?" Often, the answer lies in what those eyes were gazing at hours before standing on the prayer mat! A vessel already filled with the smoke of unlawful images cannot easily absorb the pure light of revelation. 3. It corrupts how a person views real life and family. Unleashing the gaze breeds discontentment; it makes a husband ungrateful for his lawful wife, makes a wife discontent with her lawful husband, and makes young people view marriage and human dignity through a distorted, materialistic lens. 4. Conversely, when a believer strives to lower the gaze for the sake of Allah, Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, explained in his masterpiece "Al-Jawab Al-Kafi" that Allah rewards that believer's heart with three priceless gifts: First, Allah fills his heart with a sweetness and joy of faith that is far more delightful than the forbidden glance he left behind. Second, Allah illuminates his heart with insight, wisdom, and spiritual clarity (Basirah), which is why right after the verses of lowering the gaze in Surah An-Nur, Allah revealed the famous Verse of Light: ﴿اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ﴾ [النور: ٣٥] — "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth!" Third, Allah grants his heart strength, courage, and steadfastness, freeing him from the slavery of base desires! Dear brothers and sisters, especially our beloved youth: We cannot speak about lowering the gaze today without confronting the greatest challenge of our era: the challenge of screens, the internet, social media, and inappropriate digital content. In the past, the Prophet ﷺ warned his Companions in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on the authority of Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, against sitting idly in the streets, and when they said they needed to gather, he commanded them: «فَأَعطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهُ» — "Then give the street its right!" And when they asked what the right of the street was, the very first thing he named was: «غَضُّ البَصَرِ» — "Lowering the gaze!" Today, my dear brothers and sisters, the "street" is no longer outside our homes; the street has entered our pockets, our living rooms, and our bedrooms through our smartphones, tablets, and computers! Today, vast industries and complex algorithms are engineered specifically to capture your eyeballs, to provoke curiosity, and to slip immodest scenes, suggestive reels, and explicit traps into your feed when you are alone, tired, or bored. And it is precisely in those moments of digital solitude that the warning of our Prophet ﷺ in Sunan Ibn Majah, narrated by Thawban, may Allah be pleased with him, rings loudest in our ears. The Prophet ﷺ spoke of people who will come on the Day of Judgment with good deeds as huge as the white mountains of Tihamah, yet Allah will turn them into scattered dust! When the Companions asked in terror who they were, the Prophet ﷺ said: «أَمَا إِنَّهُم إِخوَانُكُم وَمِن جِلدَتِكُم، وَيَأخُذُونَ مِنَ اللَّيلِ كَمَا تَأخُذُونَ، وَلَكِنَّهُم أَقوَامٌ إِذَا خَلَوا بِمَحَارِمِ اللهِ انتَهَكُوهَا!» — "They are your brothers and from your own people, and they pray at night as you do, but they are a people who, when they are alone with the prohibitions of Allah, violate them!" When the bedroom door is locked, when the lights are dimmed, and when the screen glows in your hand—remember that you are not alone! The All-Seeing Lord Who created the lens of your eye is watching over you. How noble, how beloved to Allah is that young man or young woman who sees a tempting link or an unlawful video appear on the screen in the dead of night, and immediately closes it, saying: "I fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!" That single click of closing a forbidden window in secret may be the very deed that shades you under the Throne of the Most Merciful on the Day of Resurrection! May Allah bless me and you through the Glorious Quran, and benefit us through its verses and wise reminder. I say these words of mine, and I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Almighty for myself, for you, and for all Muslims from every sin; so seek His forgiveness, for indeed He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, abundant, pure, and blessed praise, as our Lord loves and is pleased with. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and I bear witness that our Prophet Muhammad is His chosen Servant and Messenger. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his Companions. How do we translate this spiritual message into practical reality? How can a Muslim—whether a teenager in school, a university student, a professional at work, or a parent at home—successfully guard his or her gaze in our hyper-connected world? Let us take home five practical, actionable steps: First: Practice the "First-Second Rule" (Decisive Interruption). Imam Al-Ghazali and Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim explained that desire begins as a tiny spark (Khatrah or النظرة الأولى). In the first second that an unlawful image appears—whether on the street or on a screen—it is very easy to look away or scroll past. But if you pause for three or four seconds out of curiosity, the spark turns into a flame that is much harder to extinguish. Train your thumb and your eyelid to react instantly in the first millisecond with "Astaghfirullah" and move away! Second: Practice Strict Digital Hygiene and Cut the Triggers. Just as we do not walk into polluted places and expect our lungs to stay clean, we cannot follow immodest accounts, watch corrupt shows, or scroll aimlessly at 2:00 a.m. in bed and expect our eyes to remain pure! Audit your social media today: unfollow every page, influencer, or channel that compromises your modesty; install content-filtering tools on your devices and your children's devices; and make a firm rule never to take your phone to bed for mindless late-night browsing. Third: Channel Your Energy into Lawful Paths and Prophetic Remedies. For those who are able, hasten toward marriage and make marriage easy and affordable for our youth! And for those who are not yet able, hold fast to the Prophetic prescription recorded by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him: «يَا مَعشَرَ الشَّبَابِ، مَنِ استَطَاعَ مِنكُمُ البَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ؛ فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلبَصَرِ وَأَحصَنُ لِلفَرجِ، وَمَن لَم يَستَطِعْ فَعَلَيهِ بِالصَّومِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ وِجَاءٌ» — "O young people! Whoever among you can afford marriage, let him marry, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity; and whoever cannot afford it, let him fast, for fasting will be a shield for him." Fill your time with sports, beneficial study, Quranic recitation, and righteous company; for an empty mind is Satan's workshop. Fourth: Remember the Ultimate Reward of the Eyes in Jannah. Every time your soul struggles to turn away from a forbidden sight, remind your eyes of what Allah has prepared for them in Paradise: the greatest joy of all—looking upon the Noble Face of Allah the Almighty! Allah says in Surah Al-Qiyamah: ﴿وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاضِرَةٌ ۝ إِلَى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ﴾ [القيامة: ٢٢-٢٣] — "Some faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord!" How could we trade the eternal honor of gazing upon our Creator in Jannah for a fleeting, pixelated image on a screen in this perishing world?! Fifth: Never Despair—Renew Your Repentance Immediately. If your foot slips and your eyes fall into sin, never let Satan whisper to you: "You are a hypocrite; there is no hope for you!" Rather, immediately perform Wudu, pray two Rak'ahs, beg Allah for forgiveness, and follow the slip with a good deed; for Allah loves those who constantly turn back to Him in repentance and those who purify themselves. As the Arab poet eloquently said regarding the arrows of the gaze: لَا مَرحَبًا بِسُرُورٍ عَادَ بِالضَّرَرِ "All great calamities begin with a single glance, and the greatest infernos start from the tiniest sparks! As long as a person lets his eyes roam freely over what is forbidden, he stands upon the brink of peril; he pleases his eyeball with that which wounds his own heart—never welcome a fleeting pleasure that brings lasting harm!" O Allah, purify our hearts from hypocrisy, our deeds from ostentation, our tongues from falsehood, and our eyes from betrayal, for indeed You know the stealthy glance of the eyes and what the breasts conceal. O Allah, we ask You for guidance, Taqwa, chastity, and self-sufficiency. O Allah, protect our youth, our sons, our daughters, and our families from the trials of this age, both open and hidden. Make the Quran the spring of our hearts and the light of our sight, and grant us the ultimate joy of gazing upon Your Noble Countenance in Paradise without any harm or trial.
